Dr. Coe and Dr. Gidvani at the Cervical Spine Research Society Red Carpet Reception

Dr. Coe was selected by the Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS) several years ago to lead an effort to perform a systematic literature review of a screw fixation surgical technique in the cervical spine (back of the neck) that has been in common usage in the US for over twenty years.  This technique, originally developed in Europe in the later half of the last century was so obviously superior in stabilizing the cervical spine as compared to wires or external immobilization that it was rapidly adopted just a few years after it was first used in the US in the late 1980’s..

Nevertheless, questions remained as to the safety and efficacy of the use of these implant systems.  Dr. Coe chaired a committee of US surgeons and other researchers to collaborate in an effort to establish the safety and efficacy of these devices.   This study was completed a year ago.  The good news that theses systems were found to be effective and safe (incidence of nerve damage was 1% or less with almost no chance of spinal cord injury from simply using these devices.)

He first presented the this data at the CSRS meeting in Chicago in late 2012 and since has presented this study at meetings in Hong Kong, Phoenix, France and New Orleans.   On December 4, 2013, the study was published in the prestigious Journal of Bone and Joint surgery.
